Specialising in container shipping
Container shipping is a flexible and versatile means of transport that can be adapted to almost any type of goods. With this international logistics system, we transport your goods efficiently over long distances. The choice of the right type of container depends on the nature of the goods. Haalboom Logistics typically uses standardised 20- or 40-foot containers for consumer goods such as textiles, electronics or furniture. For perishable goods such as fruit, vegetables, meat or pharmaceutical products, we use special refrigerated containers – known as reefers – which ensure a constant temperature. We also ship ‘bulk goods’ such as grain, sand or scrap metal in bulk containers. Open-top or flat-rack containers are used for particularly bulky machines or vehicles. With this special type of container, we can even ship goods that do not fit into a closed standard container.
Good to know: Container shipping is proving to be a particularly efficient means of transport for large quantities of goods. Compared to transport by air, shipping by container means longer delivery times, but this is offset by significantly lower costs, which is particularly evident when transporting large quantities of goods.
The capacity of a 40-foot container:
A 40-foot container can hold around 80,000 rubber ducks – provided they all squeeze together nicely! With the necessary packaging, we arrive at around 47,000 rubber ducks and a usable container volume of approx. 70%.
The type of goods usually influences the freight rate. Although the calculation of container shipping is primarily based on container size and distance, unlike rubber ducks, dangerous goods such as chemicals or flammable liquids incur additional costs because special safety requirements must be met. Perishable goods also often require higher freight rates than, for example, textiles or electronic goods, which are relatively easy to handle, due to the use of reefers or accelerated handling. In addition to the type of goods, weight also plays a decisive role. A 20-foot container may not exceed a gross weight of approximately 30 tonnes, while similar limits apply to 40-foot containers, although the payload is slightly lower due to the higher dead weight of the container. It is important to note not only the permissible container load, but also the specifications of the shipping companies and the maximum weights that may be transported by road or rail.
Loading a container requires special care. The load must be evenly distributed to prevent damage during transport. Unevenly loaded containers can tip over during handling or destabilise the means of transport. In addition, goods should be secured, for example with lashing straps, wooden crates or air cushions, so that they do not move even in heavy seas. Shipping companies and port authorities also require a Verified Gross Mass (VGM), i.e. an official weighing of the loaded container, to rule out overloading.
